One of the more significant quotes in this WaPo piece about the Senkaku/Diaoyu dispute is buried at the end: the Japanese professor saying there's no possibility of a major war between China and Japan.
There is enough latent hostility between Japan the Peoples Republic of China, plus many serious issues that need management if not a resolution. It A large war is a possibility in the long run. The islands in question will not be the cause except maybe to provide a pro forma cause belli.
The quote at the end of the article is "no possibility of a total war between PRC and Japan but there could be a small-scale armed conflict..." I paraphrased this to: no possibility of major war between PRC and Japan.
No possibility is probably too strong. But I'd say the possibility is very slim. That doesn't mean apathy is in order. It isn't.
