...the Republicans trot out the hardly novel idea of a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. Even if one supports this, and I certainly do not, it can't be anything but a distraction from the current impasse, as opposed to a step toward resolving it.

It is hardly novel it has been kicking around for years.
I think those supporting it are doing so a long term solution to prevent further problems not as a solution to the current problem. They know how long it takes to get an admendment passed even with out oppostion.

The question is why are they bringing it up now. Could it be to distract attention from their irresponsible, indefensible position in the current negotiations?
