Robert Lawrence on why the U.S. auto companies have loved to build trucks

A very interesting story, which I did not know and which goes back to the U.S.-E.C. trade quarrels of the '60s.

Thanks for the heads-up. I had wondered about this question (and more generally about why the Big Three have been so unsuccessful at responding to Toyota and Honda). I know that the answer is quite complicated, but this is an important piece of the puzzle.

And it's interesting how legislation that has long outlived its original purpose (retaliation against Volkswagen for EC tariffs on US chicken) stays on the books. I'm sure students of Congress have written whole volumes on this phenomenon.
