Rep. Allen West, a Florida Republican, was recently captured on video asserting that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party.snipWhat made West’s comment . . so striking was the almost complete lack of condemnation from Republican congressional leaders or other major party figures, including the remaining presidential candidates.videoWait a little bit and and interesting things pop up on the Web.Democratid Socialists of AmericaWell the list is from 2009 and it is only 70 and not the CPSU proper. But a party that calls itself Socialist (and their comments would support tvery Socialist, claims that 70 congressman are members. Not to bad for an extemporaneous comment. And of course why would the Congressional Republicans object to something that is pubic record and probably a fact of day to day work. More importantly to the article is why did "noted congressional watchers" not mention this? What else did they get wrong?HT: Gateway PunditHank’s Eclectic Meanderings
Hank,I do not have time to follow your links now, but let me say this:I know a lot about Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). DSA is nowhere near the CPUSA in any respect; it's closer to the Swedish social democratic party. DSA was a merger in the early 80s between Dem. Socialist Organizing Cte (DSOC), led by Michael Harrington, a noted left anti-Communist, and something called New American Mvt.I'll check the link when I have time but I don't know where the 70 congressmen as members comes from. DSA certainly does not have 70 congressmen as members, indeed not even 7, I'm pretty sure.To say that DSA is "not the CPSU proper" is ridiculous and beneath you. It would be like my saying that the Conservative Political Action Cte (or whatever it's called) "is not the Italian Fascist party proper."
